Guardians of the Galaxy Classic Movie Review

Classic Movie Reviews are once a week posts in which I review a movie from the past. It might have to do with a movie coming out that week or just a personal favorite of mine. These reviews may contain spoilers.

Because of the release of this year’s Marvel “risk” based on a superhero no one has ever heard of, Ant-Man, I thought I’d look at last year’s Marvel “risk” based on superheroes no one had ever heard of. Are any of these movies actually even risks at this point?

Guardians of the Galaxy is the story of how Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), is forced to team up with an alien woman named Gamora (Zoe Saldana), a giant walking tree (Vin Diesel), a regular giant (Dave Bautista), and a talking, psychotic raccoon (voiced by… Bradley Cooper? I guess?).  They must work together to protect an orb containing a powerful stone that can wipe out anything in its path.

When I saw the trailers for this movie I wasn’t that interested at all.  I never even saw it in theaters.  I regret that now.  This movie is great and wildly entertaining.  The action, the adventure, and the comedy all hit perfectly.  All the actors do a great job.  Dave Bautista wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected, having been a wrestler (other than The Rock none of those are very good).  But the star is clearly Chris Pratt.  This guy nails everything he is in and I can’t wait to see him in more in the future.

There really isn’t much to complain about.  Some of the jokes don’t quite hit all the way and are cheesy but that’s nothing serious.  The effects are great for the most part but lack on occasion.  The movie does slow down a bit at times but is never boring.  Again, these are all just minor points to fill in the “negatives” portion of my review.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a great movie and is definitely worth checking out if you haven’t seen it, even if you aren’t a fan of other superhero movies.  It is different and is a breathe of fresh air into the genre.  The movie gets even better upon repeat viewings.  It earned the number 3 spot on my top 10 movies of the MCU list for good reason and gets a 4.75/5 from me.

What did you think of one of last year’s most popular movies? Let me know in the comments.
