It’s always fun when a movie’s title basically sums up the movie. Yep I hated this one folks. Not even going to try and hide it.
In this part of my review I usually give a little plot synopsis. I really shouldn’t have to for this one because it is exactly like pretty much every rom-com ever made. But in case you have been living under a rock and have never seen one here it is: A girl thinks she loves the single life until she meets someone she thinks is worth changing her ways for. They start their relationship and things are great. Then something sad happens (usually to a family member) but that is almost immediately (and inexplicably) forgotten by the movie and all the characters. Then something happens between the two main characters and they take a little break before getting back together and living happily ever after. They are literally all the same. But at least some of them are executed well and are genuinely funny. This is not one of them.
There are a few (very few) positives to this disaster. It did make me laugh a handful of times. Not a lot and never a gut-busting, laugh out loud moment, but a few giggles. The acting was decent despite the fact they don’t make me laugh. And the movie has some cool cameos. LeBron James makes an appearance and is by far the funniest part of this movie.
LeBron James is the funniest part of this movie… Let that sink in. That sentence shouldn’t exist. That’s why this movie is bad. Besides the time he is on screen, the movie just isn’t funny. I shouldn’t be watching a comedy, whose one job is to make you laugh, and be waiting for LeBron to show up so I can actually laugh. In fact, there is a point in the movie where it seems to give up trying to make you laugh and focuses on things like the relationship. But I literally didn’t care at all about the characters or the relationship in order for that to work for me. The plot is cliché, the characters are uninteresting, it felt overly long (despite being only about 2 hours), and it was just flat out not funny to me. And I found out the main reason why as soon as the credits started rolling. It was directed by Judd Apatow. His movies just don’t usually do it for me. I don’t find them funny for the most part.
So that’s about it for my little rant review about Trainwreck. Most of you will probably like it. It’s getting solid reviews elsewhere. I personally didn’t find it funny at all. And it is not just because it’s a rom-com. There are plenty that are executed better and are genuinely funny and that (somewhat begrudgingly) I actually like. This isn’t one of them. I found Ant-Man much better and in fact much funnier despite it not technically being a comedy. Trainwreck is exactly that and gets a 1.25/5 from me (which actually is about a quarter point for every time this movie made me actually laugh).
Let me know what you think of this one in the comments.
