Top 10 Movies of 2014

Top 10 lists will be a list of 10 movies that will be published once a week and will either have to do with a movie coming out that week or just what I want to do at the time.

This week’s top 10 is based on the fact that I watched Whiplash last week and loved it.  So here are the best movies of last year. Notes: I have yet to see Birdman (I know I need to get on that) and I am counting American Sniper as a 2015 film since that is when it got it’s wide release (limited release in 2014).

10. Interstellar

– It’s overly long and very confusing but it’s an entertaining sci-fi flick with some stunning visuals.  McConaughey kills it again as he’s been doing recently.

9. The Equalizer

– Age doesn’t seem to hurt Denzel Washington.  He is at the top of his game in this solid action movie.  The “Home Alone in a Home Depot” scene is worth the price of admission in itself.

8. John Wick

– Another great action movie from last year.  Keanu Reeves does the best he can do (let’s face it he’s just not a good actor, but is decent in this one) and the action scenes are as good as it gets.  The long takes during them really add to it.

7. Edge of Tomorrow

– A great sci-fi movie that I didn’t expect to like that much.  The premise is interesting and the plot somehow doesn’t get confusing despite the subject matter.  And it’s highly entertaining.

6. Gone Girl

– I can’t believe this one is so far down but it’s still an amazing movie.  It takes unexpected turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat.  David Fincher delivers a dark and gritty mystery that is truly great.  Batman Ben Affleck also does a great job.

5. The Lego Movie

– This is my favorite animated movie of all time after seeing it.  It’s a ton of fun even for adults.  It’s super funny and the voice acting is incredible.

4. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

– After seeing this initially I would have thought it would be higher. I like the next 3 films a little more but this movie is amazing.  The CGI (and motion capture work by Andy Serkis), the action scenes, the story, even the scenes with just the apes are all just fantastic.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy

– Another film I didn’t expect to like. I didn’t even see it in theaters.  But once I finally got around to seeing it, I had an absolute ball watching it.  You can read my full review for this movie here.

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier

– My favorite part of this movie is it moves away from a straight superhero movie and is more of a spy/thriller kind of movie.  And I loved every second of it.  It goes back and forth between that and The Avengers as my favorite Marvel movie.

  1. Transformers Age of Extinction

-Gotcha. Totally kidding.  That movie is atrocious.

My actual number one is obviously Whiplash.  Anyone who has read my review knows that I absolutely love this movie.  By far my favorite music movie of all time.  It’s very close to entering my top 10 favorites.  Anyone who hasn’t seen it should make it the next movie they watch even if it’s just to enjoy JK Simmons’s performance.

Honorable Mentions: There were tons of good movies from last year and any of these could have easily made the list- 22 Jump Street, Godzilla, Raid 2, Nightcrawler, Fury just to name a few.

Let me know in the comments which movies from last year were your favorites!
