Top 10 ’80s Action Movies

Top 10 lists will be a list of 10 movies that will be published once a week and will either have to do with a movie coming out that week or just what I want to do at the time.

It’s a quiet week at the movie theaters in terms of new releases (no doubt the calm before the Hunger Games storm), so I couldn’t come up with a suitable Top 10 list this week based on those movies.  So instead I’m going to visit my favorite genre and era of movies and go with Top 10 ’80s action movies. This is also my first post-Liebster Award nomination list so I hope all of my new readers and followers enjoy.  This was by far one of the hardest lists yet to narrow down.

10. Beverly Hills Cop

– It features Eddie Murphy in his best movie role and is filled with action and comedy.  It very much deserves a spot.

9. Raiders of the Lost Ark

– Before you guys crucify me for not having this higher, let me explain.  I don’t see this as primarily an action movie.  I see it as an adventure movie first, which is an important distinction.  So while as a movie it deserves higher, as an action movie I think this is a good place for it. Still amazing though.

8. First Blood

– Kicking off the Rambo series in explosive (pun obviously intended) fashion, it’s my favorite of the bunch.  For a movie that only has one death (and even that was an accident), it’s still jam packed with action.

7. Commando

– Cheesy? Yes. Unrealistic? You bet.  Fun? It sure is.

6. Lethal Weapon

– Rewatched this one a few days back.  I forgot how fun of a movie it is.  Mel Gibson and Danny Glover’s back and forth is almost unmatched, as is the comedy and action.

5. Aliens

– While the first Alien is more of a sci-fi horror movie, the sequel turns up the action. And I love every second of it.

4. The Terminator

– While the sequel is the better movie, that one didn’t come out until the ’90s, so I’ll have to save that for another list. Don’t sleep on the first Terminator, though.  It’s a fantastic action movie featuring Schwarzenegger in one of his best roles.

3. Predator

– Speaking of Arnold, here he is again with his third entry on this list (which if you know me at all is no surprise).  Predator is one of those films that is endlessly rewatchable and is loaded with really good action and some amazing one liners.

2. Top Gun

– Tom Cruise. Fighter jets. Kenny Loggins. You can’t argue with this movie being here so don’t even try.

1. Die Hard

– I’m sure most of you saw this coming, considering this is my favorite movie of all time.  It is well deserving though as it has the greatest movie hero ever, one of the greatest villains ever, really good humor, and some awesome action. I’ve seen it more times than I can count and it never gets old.

Lots of Honorable Mentions this week: First Blood Part 2, Robocop, Red Dawn, Cobra, The Running Man, The Road Warrior, and Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi (I don’t consider these action movies even though many would have them on the list).

What are some of your favorite ’80s action movies? Let me know in the comments.
