The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 Movie Review

mockingjay part 2

Yeah I think that’ll about do it for this whole splitting the last book into 2 parts thing.

Mockingjay Part 2 is obviously the conclusion (hopefully) to the Hunger Games franchise.  It details the rebellion’s assault on the capital, mainly focusing on Katniss’s quest to kill President Snow.  There’s not a whole lot more to say about the plot without spoiling things, but honestly that’s all you really need to know.  Plus I’m sure most of you have read the books and know what’s going to happen anyway.

If any of you have ready my reviews for the other 3 movies, this is going to shock you: I actually liked this movie.  It’s good.  It really is.  There was a lot to like and there were quite a few moments where I was having a lot of fun with the movie.  There are several action scenes that are really well done and super intense.  The Capital turns into basically a giant Hunger Games so our heroes have to survive a bunch of different things, which leads to some interesting moments.  The story in this one for the most part is really good and had some twists I didn’t see coming (although there were others that were predictable and I did see coming).  I think this was one time that not reading the books was actually an advantage for me. I had no idea what was going to happen and I think that made me enjoy it more.  Most of the cast is at least good, with even Jennifer Lawrence having some decent moments for once.  Woody Harrelson and Philip Seymour Hoffman were great as always and Harrelson in particular has some great comic relief moments.

While this movie was good, it could have been fantastic if only they hadn’t split it into two parts.  There are times in this movie that really, really drag, particularly in the beginning.  There are some really unnecessary moments that could have been cut (seriously do we really need a wedding between characters we barely know?).  This movie easily could have been cut down to about an hour and 45 minutes.  Since there was only about 45 minutes of anything of any value in Part 1, this could have been an incredible 2 and a half hour movie put together.  Instead we get 2 movies that just have a ton of unnecessary filler.  There are also some moments in this movie that just completely took me out of it, mostly Katniss/Peeta moments.  There is one in particular that stands out that I couldn’t believe was in the movie.  My last real issue was This. Movie. Doesn’t. End.  Seriously, the ending goes on forever.  The screen cuts to black several different times before another scene pops up.  It earned audible groans from the entire audience.  It’s worse than the last Lord of the Rings ending.

All in all this was at the very least a successful conclusion to the series.  It was epic at times and very entertaining at parts.  It is by no means perfect and a lot of problems still remain leftover from the other movies.  It didn’t need to be split into 2 parts because it would have been a fantastic movie as just one.  I recommend it to anyone who has watched the previous movies and it’s my favorite of the series by far.  Because of the issues I had with it, I can’t quite get it to a 4.  But I did enjoy it and will give The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 just below that at 3.75/5.

Let me know what you thought of the movie in the comments.
