Remember when most of us were saying things like “This is just another Rocky sequel” and “Do we really need this?” Well, we were very, very wrong.
Creed is a new installment in the Rocky franchise and follows the son of Apollo Creed, Adonis (Michael B. Jordan). He follows in his father’s footsteps and becomes a boxer, under the training of Rocky Balboa (Stallone). After a few fights, he earns a fight with the Heavyweight champion that no one thinks he can win. Does he? You’ll have to see the movie to find out.
I can’t sing this movie’s praises enough (Don’t worry I won’t actually do any singing. No one wants to hear that). It’s fantastic. It has a similar plot to the first Rocky movie as an underdog story, while standing completely on its own, despite Rocky Balboa’s presence. Speaking of which, if Sylvester Stallone doesn’t get at the very least nominated for an Oscar for his role in this movie, it’ll be a bigger snub than The Lego Movie not getting nominated. This might be his best performance ever. He doesn’t get enough credit for his ability to act, but hopefully this can change some people’s minds. And as great as his performance is, Michael B. Jordan goes blow for blow (get it? Boxing reference) with him. He’s perfect as Apollo Creed’s son. This movie also has some of the best boxing ever put on screen. The boxing scenes are filled with long takes, like one shot long for one match. They look real and you feel every punch like you are there in the ring. It’s brilliantly acted and brilliantly directed. The score is also great and has the Rocky theme remixed a bit. Then, at one point in the movie, the real theme starts playing and is electrifying. The movie flies by and never has a dull moment. Even during romantic scenes, training scenes, and some other scenes that I would spoil if I mentioned, the movie keeps you entertained and interested. I really could go on and on with this movie.
Literally my only small complaint is that the beginning feels a bit rushed. I think they could have developed Adonis a little more with just a few more minutes added to the beginning.
But don’t worry, I won’t let that small nitpick stop me from giving this movie the score it deserves. It is one of my favorite movies of the year, and by far the best Rocky movie since the first. Go see this and go see it in the theater. I saw it in a crowded theater where everyone was really into the movie. The atmosphere was great. People were groaning and cheering during the fights like they were actually there. It was a great experience watching a great movie. Don’t miss out on it. Whether you are a fan of the series or not, whether you are a fan of boxing movies or not, whether you are even a fan of sports movies or not, I highly recommend it. I’m going high here. Ready? Boom: 5/5 for Creed.
