Jane Got A Gun Movie Review

I wanted to see The Finest Hours this weekend, but it was playing at weird times that didn’t work for me.  So I saw this instead. It was my first (movie related) bad decision this year.

Jane Got A Gun is a western with a terrible title that follows a woman (Natalie Portman) who hires her ex-boyfriend (Joel Edgerton) to protect her and her husband from some outlaw gang leader (Obi-Wan Kenobi Ewan McGregor) who is mad about something and wants to kill them.  If you are thinking “that sounds like it doesn’t make much sense,” you would be correct.

Well even bad westerns have some good shootouts in them at least, right? Well, not really.  This movie has one that is ok at best. And the sad thing is that’s the best part of the movie.  That’s right, the “ok” shootout is the best part of the movie.  That’s never a good thing.  There’s not a whole lot else to like about this one.  Joel Edgerton stands out as someone who does his best with what he was given.  I could see where the plot was trying to go at times that could have really worked but never really got there.  There’s a halfway decent twist, but the movie doesn’t really earn it enough to make a huge impact.

The main reason it doesn’t earn the twist is that the movie doesn’t make much sense at all.  I’m still not sure what the bad guy’s main motivation was.  They try to explain through flashbacks but I still didn’t really get it.  The characters are woefully underdeveloped and not interesting in the slightest which lead me to not really care about any of them.  They again try to develop them some during flashbacks but all they end up doing is mess with the pace and make the movie more confusing.  I know Natalie Portman is a good actress because I’ve seen her do good stuff.  But she is not in this movie (think Star Wars Episode 2 with a bad southern accent).  It may just be the fact she had nothing to work with, or it may have just been a paycheck for her.  Who knows, but she wasn’t good in this one.

Overall, the movie really is just flat out boring.  I found myself checking the time a few times.  It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense and can’t even make up for it with a decent action scene or two.  It may be an alright “watch on cable” movie, but don’t rush out to the theater to see it. There are plenty of things that you could catch up on in theaters that are worth the money much more.  Jane Got A Gun gets the first negative score of 2016, 2/5.

I know none of you saw this and you will all listen to me and avoid it, so tell me about your favorite westerns in the comments.
