The Jungle Book Movie Review

jungle book

I thought the idea of children’s movies was to not scare the living crap out of the children?…

The Jungle Book is a live action (kind of) remake of the “classic” Disney animated movie.  It features the voice talents of Bill Murray as Baloo the bear, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, and Lupita Nyong’o as Raksha trying to protect Mowgli (Neel Sethi) from Shere Khan (Idris Elba).

I’ll just start by saying this movie is great; far better than I expected it to be.  I am not a big fan of the animated movie and never have been, even as a child.  To me it’s just a really boring movie with one catchy song.  But this one was much better.  It’s very entertaining and I was never bored at all watching the movie.  It is technically live action, though everything except the boy if CGI.  I’d normally have a problem with that, but the CGI in this movie is spectacular.  Everything from the environment to the animals looks almost completely flawless.  It was quite incredible.  Most of the voice acting was phenomenal with Murray, Kingsley, and Elba standing out in particular.  The little boy who played Mowgli was also great, especially considering the fact he was acting against a green screen the whole time.

There wasn’t a whole lot I didn’t like about this one.  I will say that parents should be careful with taking young children.  This movie is very intense at times and may frighten younger kids. I saw a couple parents have to take their kids out of the theater.  I’m assuming that had something to do with the darkness and intensity of this movie.  But, it’s great for adults because it makes it a little more entertaining.  There are two songs in this movie.  One works and the other one doesn’t really.  It feels forced and out of place.  Also, Scarlett Johansson was miscast as the voice of Kaa, in my opinion.  Something about it didn’t work for me.  That was the only voice actor I had any problem with at all.

Overall, this is a great remake of The Jungle Book.  While maybe not great for younger kids, it’s enjoyable for older kids and adults and really is the perfect date movie.  I highly recommend The Jungle Book and give it a 4.5/5.
