The Light Between Oceans Movie Review

I bet you didn’t expect to see me review this one did you?

The Light Between Oceans is a drama starring Michael Fassbender, who works on a small, lonely island lighthouse, and Alicia Vikander as his wife.  After several miscarriages, their dream to have a baby seems hopeless.  That is until a boat washes up on the shore carrying a dead man and a baby.  They raise the baby as their own, only to find out her actual mother is still alive.

I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I would. The acting is solid and it is beautifully shot.  I found the story interesting once it got going.  It raises some moral questions that’ll leave you wondering what you would do, or what is truly right and wrong. It didn’t always go the route I expected it to either. I was intrigued and invested in what was going on, for the most part.

While the movie is good, there are some things that keep it from being even better. The main one is the relationship between the main characters.  It is super underdeveloped and threw me off for the first 30 minutes of the movie.  I also don’t think Fassbender was the best choice for his role.  He gives a good performance, but he feels so old and out of place compared to Vikander. The movie is a little long and you can definitely feel it at points. I also have some problems with the ending, but I won’t spoil it here.

Overall, this is an enjoyable and entertaining romantic drama.  Guys, you could definitely do much worse for a date night movie.  It isn’t perfect and there are some things I think would have been better if done differently.  But it keeps you invested, and for that I’ll give The Light Between Oceans a 3.5/5.
