The Magnificent Seven Movie Review

The original movie is my favorite western, so this one had a lot to live up to. But does it?

The Magnificent Seven follows a group of outlaws (led by Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt) who band together to protect a small town from an evil baron who wants the land the town sits on and will stop at nothing to get it.

I’ll start off by saying this is much different than the original.  However, that doesn’t mean it’s bad at all.  It is actually incredibly entertaining.  The action scenes and shootout are very well done.  There are a couple intense standoffs that harkened back to the prime years of the western. All of the all star cast does well, particularly Denzel and Pratt who have some great chemistry.  There are some really funny moments throughout the movie. Antoine Fuqua does a great job as usual with the directing as there are some very well shot scenes.  The music is also good, with some hints of the original movie’s score.

I don’t have a lot of huge complaints.  Obviously, we’ve seen the story before in the original and in about half the westerns ever made, so it’s fairly predictable.  The villain is decent but not as great as the one in the original.  The movie is also a little long with a little too much downtime in the beginning that could have been cut out.  There’s enough character development to get by, but none of them are extremely deep.

Overall, I had a great time watching this movie.  It isn’t the best movie ever but it is very entertaining.  It has tons of great action with some great moments and that was what I wanted from it.  I can’t say it is as good as the original, though they are very different movies.  With that said, it is one of the better movies I’ve seen recently.  I’ll give The Magnificent Seven a 4.25/5.
