Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 Movie Review

I aspire to be able to come up with witty insults at the level of those thrown at Rocket in this movie. Trash panda and triangle faced monkey? Pure gold and had me rolling.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 picks up where the first one left off as we rejoin our ragtag team of heroes on more adventures that would make Han Solo proud. During one of these, the group meets Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt)¬†father (Kurt Russell) and things don’t quite go as planned.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy movie was a surprise hit a few years ago and I happen to really enjoy it. This sequel is… not as good. But there are things to like. Chris Pratt is as fantastic as ever. He’s fun to watch in anything and brings his sarcastic wit back again. All of the main characters are good and look like they are all having fun with the movie. It doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is good because the movie is reallllly dumb. Baby Groot steals every scene that he is in. And, for the most part, the action is really good, despite tons and tons of CGI (take that as you will). Lastly, just like the first movie, the soundtrack is awesome and adds a lot to the movie.

Where the movie struggles is the plot is a little odd and just a bit too far out there. I was having a hard time keeping up and understanding what was going on. Also, a bunch of the humor misses. While some of the movie is extremely funny, a lot of jokes fell completely flat for me. The movie also brings back a few characters and kind of changes their personalities and purpose without really explaining why or how. The new characters introduced are relatively useless and I didn’t care all that much about them. Sylvester Stallone is also randomly in the movie for like¬†2 minutes and 46 seconds and I can’t for the life of me figure out why Rocky/Rambo is in a Guardians of Galaxy movie being completely wasted.

Overall the movie is decent. I liked it but didn’t love it. I am not in any hurry to see it again. It isn’t as good as the first, but I’ll still give Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 a positive 3.25/5.
