Jumanji Review- Jordan

This might have the most laugh out loud moments of any movie this year.

Jumanji is a remake/sequel to the 1995 Robin Williams movie of the same name. This one follows four teenagers who get transported into a video game, into the bodies of the characters they chose (Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan). Their only way out is to beat the game.

I saw the original Jumanji a long time ago and it never really caught my interest. So, I had low expectations going into this one. But I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. First, it’s flat out hilarious. I was laughing throughout the movie, along with the rest of the audience in the theater. The funniest moments come from the actors and their portrayal of teenagers. The Rock is his usual charismatic self, but this movie might have my favorite Jack Black and Kevin Hart performances. Black is portraying a 16 year old girl and absolutely nails it, while Hart portrays a football star who’s physical stature is, well, very different from Hart. And while those are my favorite performances, I will also mention Karen Gillan, because she is great as well, playing a shy, nerdy teenager. The movie also has some surprisingly good action scenes, some of which come out of nowhere.

The movie isn’t without its faults. It isn’t particularly deep. It tries to play on certain themes, like not judging people by their appearances and spending too much time on electronics rather than talking with people, but never really gets there. The villain is also underdeveloped and sort of useless in the grand scheme of the movie.

Overall, the movie is very entertaining. It’s a little rough for the first 15 minutes and takes a bit to find its footing, but once they are in the video game you’ll have plenty of fun with the movie. I highly recommend it to anyone, and give Jumanji a 4/5.
