A Quiet Place Review- Jordan

on

Jim is my favorite character from The Office. If John Krasinski keeps making movies like this, he will quickly become one of my favorite actors/directors in general.

A Quiet Place is set in a world that has been ravaged by creatures that hunt solely by sound. Those that have survived must live in complete silence to avoid being victims of these creatures. The movie follows a family headed up by Krasinski and his real life wife Emily Blunt, along with their children.

The idea itself is a brilliant one for a horror/thriller and the movie lives up to its potential. It is one of the tensest movies I’ve seen in a while. It is short, only about 90 minutes, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. The world is set up really well and feels lived in. We are dropped in well after the creatures arrived on Earth and never really shown what happened. It is only seen through newspaper clippings, but you’re able to put the pieces together easily. The tension is what really builds the movie up, but the performances are what make it great. The acting by everyone is fantastic, and you’re able to get attached to the characters even though there is very little dialogue. We pretty much only see this one family, which adds to the intensity and loneliness. Other survivors are only hinted at. Another big thing when judging creature features like this one is the actual creature design, and these ones look really cool. They look like a mix of several things seen in other movies, but I won’t spoil anything for you and just let you see for yourself.

I don’t have any major problems with A Quiet Place. Probably my biggest issue is that the movie uses cheap jump scares a little too much. By that I mean that the whole movie is based in silence yet the movie uses sudden musical tones to make you jump. In my opinion, the idea and the silence is scary enough, and anything further is unnecessary and takes away from the tension it builds so brilliantly. My only other minor complaint is that the very end feels a bit cheesy and doesn’t match the tone of the rest of the movie.

Those are minor faults in an otherwise great movie. I can recommend this one to pretty much anyone. It is a good date night movie and while it has elements of horror and sci-fi, you can enjoy it even if you aren’t a fan of those genres.  2018 has been a strong year so far for movies and this one is not an exception. A Quiet Place gets a 4.5/5.
