Haunting of Hill House Review- Jordan

I had questions about how good a horror TV series could be, especially given how up and down Netflix shows have been recently. This show put any doubts I had to rest.

The Haunting of Hill House follows a family that moves into a house they intend to fix up and flip, as well as the same family in the present day. They are forced to fight demons, in more ways than one, during both time periods before their family is ripped apart forever.

This is easily one of the best shows on Netflix right now. It is hard to find a TV show that is this well acted and directed. It is worth watching for Episode 6 alone, which consists solely of 5 or 6 tracking shots, even as it cuts across time periods. It is masterful film making and is probably the best episode of TV I’ve ever seen. But good film making can only take a show so far without a good story. Luckily, this has that as well. It has been a while since I’ve wanted to binge a show so much to find out what happens next. Each character has a particular story to follow, and an excellent job is done of weaving all those pieces together flawlessly. But, given the fact that this is a horror show, how scary is it? Pretty freaking scary. While there are some jump scares in here (good ones, don’t worry), the really unsettling aspect is all the ghosts in the background of random shots. It always keeps you searching the screen, wondering what is going on around the characters.

There wasn’t much I didn’t like about the show. The time jumps do get a bit confusing at times, but it’s relatively easy to figure it out after a while. I’m not sure where they would take a second season, but if the choose to make one and it is done as well as this, I’ll definitely be watching. I highly recommend this show to anyone, even those that aren’t the biggest fans of the horror genre. The family element and themes of the show should allow you to enjoy it regardless. Catch it on Netflix now. The Haunting of Hill House gets a Golden Donut.
