Classic Movie Reviews are occasional posts in which I review a movie from the past. It might have to do with a movie coming out that week or just a personal favorite of mine. These reviews may contain spoilers.

die hard

After forcing myself to watch/rewatch the Hunger Games movies this week (look for a podcast this weekend and reviews next week), I needed to cleanse myself with some movies I think are actually good.  Die Hard was one of those (and I’m watching Top Gun as I write this).  Because of that I’ve decided to do a classic movie review on a movie that’s actually a classic, and also my favorite movie of all time.

Top 10 lists will be a list of 10 movies that will be published once a week and will either have to do with a movie coming out that week or just what I want to do at the time.

It’s a quiet week at the movie theaters in terms of new releases (no doubt the calm before the Hunger Games storm), so I couldn’t come up with a suitable Top 10 list this week based on those movies.  So instead I’m going to visit my favorite genre and era of movies and go with Top 10 ’80s action movies. This is also my first post-Liebster Award nomination list so I hope all of my new readers and followers enjoy.  This was by far one of the hardest lists yet to narrow down.

10. Beverly Hills Cop

– It features Eddie Murphy in his best movie role and is filled with action and comedy.  It very much deserves a spot.

liebster award

Today I woke up to some unexpected news.  My site got nominated for a Liebster Award.  Don’t know what that is? Yeah, I didn’t either.  So I’ll explain.  The award is intended to help connect people to newer and up-and-coming blogs.  Each person who is nominated is supposed to nominate other blogs they think deserve recognition.  Basically what this says is my site is amazing and people love it and everyone should follow it (kidding…. sort of).  In all seriousness, it’s pretty cool for people I don’t even know to have found my site and enjoy what I do.  I like sharing all of my movie-related thoughts with you guys and it’s nice to know you are enjoying it.  I thought when I started this it would just be something friends and family would look at.  It’s grown bigger than I could have imagined and I have followers from all over the world.  Thanks to all of you.

I’d like to give a special shoutout to my nominator, Steph, who has a pretty cool movie related blog where she talks about trailers and posters among other things.  Definitely check it out (link).

Back to the award itself, I (and anyone I nominate) am supposed to complete the following steps:

spectre

Bond… James Bond is back in all of his shaken martini drinking, Aston Martin driving glory.

Spectre is the 24th movie in the James Bond franchise.  It follows 007 as he tries to track down a secret terrorist organization known as Spectre.  He is forced to do so (mostly) on his own as MI6 is under investigation and the double-o program is shut down.

In honor of Spectre coming out, my top 10 target this week is (obviously) Bond… James Bond.  No, you won’t find Moonraker on this list (also should be obvious).

10. For Your Eyes Only

– I know some people like Roger Moore.  But I can’t stand his Bond movies.  His take on the character is just not enjoyable to me.  That said, this one is actually pretty interesting and fun to watch.

As I’ve done in the past, I’m reviewing several previous movies in a franchise before a new installment (Mission Impossible movies, Terminator movies).  This time I’m looking at Casino Royale and Skyfall before Spectre comes out. I’m leaving out Quantum of Solace because I don’t like it and didn’t want to rewatch it to give it a proper review.  As always, these reviews will be a bit shorter.

casino royale

Daniel Craig kicks off his Bond career in my favorite movie of the series.

Since it’s Halloween week, I figured there was no better time to return to horror movies. I’ve already done Top 10 all time horror movies and top 10 slasher movies, so this time I’m turning my sights on modern horror movies (after 2000).  There are a lot more bad ones than good ones (always remember that The Devil Inside somehow exists) but there are more good ones than you would think.

10. Orphan

– I’m really only including it for the really cool twist at the end.  Worth a watch if you haven’t seen it.
