With the unexpected Blair Witch sequel coming out this weekend, I decided to look at the best movies in the found footage genre.  Not really a surprise, but there aren’t many good ones. Here’s the list and as always, let me know your favorites in the comments.

This is a perfect example of a movie being much better when it doesn’t give away everything in its trailer and marketing.

I’m not going to give away too much about the plot because it makes the movie more enjoyable to not know much.  However, the basic premise is that a young woman (John McClane’s daughter in Live Free or Die Hard) is saved kidnapped by a creepy doomsday prepper (John Goodman) after an accident.  He takes her back to his bunker where he and another man (an actor whose name I don’t feel like looking up) reveal that an apocalyptic event has occurred and she can’t go outside without dying.

The Purge: Election Year

Honestly, my first reaction when seeing this trailer was released was “holy crap they are making another one of these?” It’s not necessarily a bad thing.  I’ve actually enjoyed both of the previous movies.  I wasn’t sure there was anywhere else they could go with it but the trailer proved me wrong.  It looks like another strong and interesting premise in this series I originally thought was going nowhere.  The whole idea of “The Purge” is interesting in itself so it isn’t surprising they keep expanding on it.  This one brings back Frank Grillo, who was by far the best part of the second movie as the conflicted cop.  I definitely don’t have a problem with them making another movie, especially since they are moving in a different direction.  I think the trailer gives away a little too much, but am still interested in and excited to see this third installment.  Check out the trailer below:
