Well, another year is in the books. So before 2017 gets into full swing, lets look back at the best movies of 2016, in my opinion of course. Before we get started, make sure to check out this list’s opposite, the Top 10 Worst Movies of 2016.  Keep in mind, as always with lists like this, my original review and rating is only part of what goes into where each movie places.  The movie’s overall quality, entertainment value, how it holds up after more thought, its impact on me, and its rewatchability are all factors. I also haven’t seen every movie that came out, unfortunately. But you can check out my reviews for each movie I did see on this list by clicking on the title. Before we got to the Top 10, here are some honorable mentions that just missed the list:

the conjuring 2

Remember how pretty much all horror sequels are terrible? This one doesn’t seem to care about that preconception.

The Conjuring 2 is another “true story” based on the case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga).  This one takes place in Enfield, England where a demonic presence haunts a family.  The Warrens come to assist.

The best horror movie this side of 2000 is getting a sequel. And now we have a trailer for said sequel that is really good… until it blows it in the last 10 seconds.

For my first trailer review of 2016, I felt the need to talk about the trailer for The Conjuring 2 that came out today (see below).  The Conjuring is one of my favorite horror movies of all time and is ripe for a sequel (or sequels), in my opinion.  The are plenty of “true stories” involving famed paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren that can be told.  So, I watched this trailer excitedly hoping for a sneak peek of more of the greatness that is The Conjuring.

Now that we have finished looking back at 2015, it’s time to look ahead to 2016.  Looking at the big name titles coming out next year, I see a lot of sequels.  For better or worse, this list reflects that.  Don’t hate the player, hate the game.  I can’t help that they are making sequels that excite me.  Obviously, we don’t know about all the movies coming out next year yet.  For example, we usually don’t learn about movies that are awards contenders until shortly before their releases next fall/winter.  Though they were in limited release in 2015, The Revenant and The Hateful 8 have yet to be released where I live, so they qualify for this list.  Do they make the list? Keep reading to find out.
