room

Another review for an Oscar-nominated movie- one I watched over a week ago and am just getting around to reviewing. My bad.

Room is the story of a young woman (Brie Larson) and her son who are being held captive by a mysterious man.  Eventually they escape and try to start a new life in a world she hasn’t seen in 7 years, and the boy has never seen.

the revenant

If Leo doesn’t win the Oscar this year, it’s pretty much hopeless.

The Revenant is about a group of fur trappers who get ambushed by Indians and are forced to find another way home.  Along the way Hugh Glass (Leonardo DiCaprio) gets attacked by a bear and left for dead by Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy).  Glass has to fight to survive so he can exact his revenge on the man who wronged him.

hunger games

The highly popular Hunger Games franchise is finally and mercifully coming to a close this Friday.  Because of that, I’m taking a look at the previous 3 movies.  I know a ton of people love these movies, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why.  As always with the franchise reviews, these will be shorter than normal reviews.  If you want to hear a more in depth discussion on these movies, it was the topic of our podcast last week.  Check that out here.

Disclaimer: No, I have not read the books.  I watch movies.  A movie franchise should stand alone from whatever book franchise it’s based on.  I read the Harry Potter books and never found myself defending the movies based on things I found in the book.  It shouldn’t and doesn’t matter.  Rant over.

The Hunger Games

The movie that kicks off the franchise also happens to be the worst movie of the bunch.

spectre

Bond… James Bond is back in all of his shaken martini drinking, Aston Martin driving glory.

Spectre is the 24th movie in the James Bond franchise.  It follows 007 as he tries to track down a secret terrorist organization known as Spectre.  He is forced to do so (mostly) on his own as MI6 is under investigation and the double-o program is shut down.

As I’ve done in the past, I’m reviewing several previous movies in a franchise before a new installment (Mission Impossible movies, Terminator movies).  This time I’m looking at Casino Royale and Skyfall before Spectre comes out. I’m leaving out Quantum of Solace because I don’t like it and didn’t want to rewatch it to give it a proper review.  As always, these reviews will be a bit shorter.

casino royale

Daniel Craig kicks off his Bond career in my favorite movie of the series.
